Yoga Photography in Birmingham – Tina’s Professional Branding Shoot
As a Birmingham-based photographer specialising in portrait, wedding, and commercial photography, I always enjoy working on projects that allow for a bit more creativity. This recent yoga and hand balancing shoot with Tina was exactly that—a mix of strength, control, and artistic expression, all brought together to create a powerful set of branding images.
Tina is an incredibly talented yoga practitioner and hand balancer who I’ve known for a number of years. She got in touch as she was launching a new website and wanted a fresh set of professional images that would truly reflect her ability, personality, and unique style.
Professional Yoga Instructor Photo Shoot in Birmingham
From the outset, Tina was clear—she didn’t want generic yoga photos. She wanted something that stood out.
Having already seen some of my previous work with fitness professionals and bodybuilders, she knew the kind of strong, clean, and impactful imagery we could create together. The aim was to produce a set of images that would elevate her brand and give her a professional edge online.
Planning the Shoot for Maximum Variety
We started the session by going through ideas and building a loose plan for the day. When it comes to shoots like this, having structure helps—but leaving space for creativity is just as important.
As Tina was building a new website, I suggested we include a variety of images:
Strong, dynamic yoga and hand balance poses
Clean, professional headshots
Natural lifestyle-style images for social media
Headshots are often overlooked, but they’re essential for things like Instagram profiles, website bios, and marketing material. Including them within the session adds even more value.
Multiple Locations, Multiple Looks
One of the key goals for this shoot was to create a diverse gallery of images, so we used several different locations throughout the day.
Studio Photography
We started in my home studio, where we could control the lighting completely. This allowed us to capture clean, sharp images that really highlighted Tina’s strength, flexibility, and form.
Garden Session
Next, we moved outside into my garden. I’m lucky to have a large outdoor space, which works perfectly for shoots in the warmer months. Natural light adds a completely different feel—softer, more relaxed, and more organic.
Digbeth Street Shoot
To finish the day, we headed into Digbeth. This area is well known for its graffiti and urban textures, which provided a totally different backdrop compared to the studio and garden.
This contrast is what makes a shoot stand out. Instead of having a full gallery of similar-looking images, Tina now has a wide range of visuals she can use across her website and social platforms.
Lighting Approach: Natural Meets Off-Camera Flash
Throughout the shoot, I used a combination of natural light and off-camera flash to shape and control the final look of the images.
Natural light for softer, lifestyle-driven shots
Off-camera flash for more dramatic, high-impact images
This approach gives flexibility and ensures consistency across different environments. Whether shooting indoors, outdoors, or on location in the city, the lighting remains intentional and controlled.
The entire session lasted around four hours, including travel into Birmingham, and gave us plenty of time to experiment with different ideas and setups.
The Importance of Strong Branding for Yoga Instructors
For yoga instructors and fitness professionals, having high-quality imagery is essential. Your photos are often the first impression potential clients have of you.
Professional photography helps you:
Stand out in a crowded market
Communicate your style and personality
Build trust with potential clients
Create a strong, recognisable brand
Tina understood this from the beginning, and it shows in the final images.
A Great Team Effort
A big thank you to my good friend Jon from Heart Wedding Photography for assisting on the day. Having someone there to help with lighting and bounce ideas around always makes a big difference, especially on longer, more creative shoots like this.
Final Images and Delivery
The images shown below are just a small selection from the full gallery delivered to Tina. On average, you can expect around 150 professionally edited images from a session like this, giving you plenty of content for your website, social media, and marketing.
